Neurodiversity Dissertation

Abstract
People with SpLDs are often underestimated and stigmatised due to a set of clinically defined ‘deficits’, used to describe and ‘label’ their differences. In recent years the term ‘neurodiversity’ has been used instead of learning disability or difficulties; twenty years after the term’s origin, this is a growing positive shift as it demonstrates that these divergences often also bring ‘abilities’. Neurodiversity refers to the diversity of the human brain and neurocognitive functioning , for those also known as neurodivergents who “suffer from” ADHD, ASD, Dyslexia, and DCD with various associated characteristics. It is estimated that 1 in 7 people in the UK is neurodivergent; the term is used to describe alternative thinking styles related to diversity and inclusion in the workplace for neurodivergents. The transition from difficulties towards diversity provides opportunities to learn how individuals are identified.
